p-Ed Contributor Tax Reform’s Lesson for Health Care Reform
New York Times
The bill’s proponents myself among them also strove to enforce a no-amendment strategy on the Senate floor. With Republicans and most Democrats on the Finance Committee adhering to the strategy countless amendments were fended off and the compromise was protected from unraveling. None of this would have happened had the Reagan administration not taken on some of the Republican Party’s sacred cows — the oil and gas industry real-estate interests and large industrial enterprises all of which benefited disproportionately from loopholes. Similarly the bill would never have passed had some Democrats not taken on an ingrained party orthodoxy — the belief that equity demanded higher tax rates. In addition there was the human factor. I remember a meeting in the White House with President Reagan and the supporters of tax reform from both parties. Each member of Congress had a few minutes to say something to the president.

Colo. Republican Party creates backlash for GP
Denver Post
Senate candidate Jane Norton. Dick Wadhams pointed to a rash of e-mails during the weekend among Colorado Republicans who are upset with the National Republican Senatorial Committee which they believe is playing favorites in the crowded 2010 primary field. The backlash is so strong Republican sources say that Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck might stay in the Senate race after all.

Anti-bama ‘Great White Hope’ Needed By Republican Party?
NPR
So the White House has decided to be charitable probably a good strategy since Jenkins’ comment is exactly the kind of repulsive race-baiting expression many voters will find radioactive. That could redound in bama’s favor. Still it’s astonishing that a U. congresswoman in a public meeting in Topeka in the YouTube age would say the Republican Party needed a “great white hope” to defeat bama.

Kay Bailey Hutchison calls for more ‘enlightened’ leadership in Texas
Dallas Morning News
“While I do think I can do more in Texas to govern better I also want to build a Republican majority” she told a group of civic and business leaders in Dallas called the Friday Group. “It is in all of our best interest that we have a Republican Party that’s worthy of governing in Texas and also having the message go out to Americans that the biggest state that is still reliably Republican is a state that has enlightened Republicans in leadership. “Hutchison said she wanted to focus on issues such as education transportation property rights and health care. And though she didn’t mention his name she bashed Perry for his comments this year expressing sympathy for those who think Texas should consider leaving the union. “Silly rhetoric about secession from the union being an option is not a good image for Texas in America or in Texas” she said. Perry spokesman Mark Miner called Hutchison’s remarks insulting to Republicans and conservatives.
Related from Z1067fm: Kay Bailey Hutchison Is Running for Governor! SomeRepublicans seemed ready to work with the Administration until theysaw the ferocity of the protesters. Those who believe the protestswere staged by the GP are giving the Republican Party too muchcredit. They’re not that well organized. It’s not that the public rejects health care reform. It’s stilla popular idea. The Kaiser Health Care poll continues to show solidsupport for requiring all Americans to have health insurance withsubsidies for those who can’t afford it (68 percent).

Patrick told a local radio station Wednesday that he believes the proposal was “entirely reasonable” and said he would sign the bill if it reached his desk. Despite expressed admiration for Kennedy’s legacy the state’s Republican Party leader said Wednesday that the GP opposes any change to the current law. “We must honor Senator Kennedy’s service by allowing those who sent him to the Senate to decide the next generation of leaders for Massachusetts” said Jennifer Nassour chairwoman of the Massachusetts Republican Party.
Related from Worlddiamondcongress2008: Sen. Keep in mind that Stavisky is a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat who makes his living largely by working against Republican candidates so he has a vested interest in trying to paint the New York GP as aligned with the so-called “far right” that even moderate Republicans claim dominates the party at the national level.

With only a few clicks of a mouse it is easily determinable whether bama is a US citizen or if the 2nd Amendment is in danger as some on the right wing allege. These and other lies have pretty well blown the Republican Party’s credibility. In short by alienating just about everybody except elderly Southern white men they have no source of new voters. If all this wasn’t bad enough the right wing talking heads on radio and cable TV as well as some Republican members of Congress seem to be losing their sanity as well: entreating the racists and those obsessed with bama’s birth certificate in their base by using code words and phrases to tell fanatics what they want to hear while remaining just tame enough to keep the more tolerant and sane side of the Republican Party from deserting them. To those on the left and in the middle it appears that in addition to losing credibility and an election the Republican Party now seems to be losing its mind.
Related from Pepsphotogallery: PHT GALLERY: Former Republican statesman George Parker dies at 86

The danger for Republicans right now in fact is that they become so entranced by the recent decline in President Barack bama’s fortunes that they lose sight of their own problems. A reminder of this challenge comes in the form of a long article in the forthcoming issue of Commentary magazine by two of the Republican Party’s deeper thinkers former Bush White House speechwriters Pete Wehner and Michael Gerson. They lay out what their article calls a “path to Republican revival” making the point that simply opposing bama initiatives isn’t sufficient to bring about such a revival. They also argue that being anti-government isn’t sufficient in a country where “it is patently clear that most Americans do not locate the source of all of today’s social ills in an overactive government. ” Instead they argue Republicans need to be seen as a party with new ideas for reforming “ossified” features of that very government particularly regulatory and tort systems that are behind the times and an education system that needs to make teachers both better paid and more accountable for their performance. Intriguingly Messrs.

Ray Sansom’s lavish use of his Republican Party-issued credit card has triggered a complaint to the Internal Revenue Service. The complaint also alleges political corruption and suggests the IRS investigate other GP officials who had American Express cards. An IRS spokesman said the agency does not confirm or deny investigations but said anonymous complaints can be filed. “Generally speaking getting something for nothing could have a tax effect” said spokesman Mike Dobzinski.

But there are signs of trouble for him. The Volusia County Republican Party recently censured Crist and a vote on a similar censure resolution deadlocked in Palm Beach County. Crist has also lost to Rubio in straw polls of GP committee members in several other counties and a handful of prominent conservatives both in Florida and across the country are backing the former state lawmaker. The opposition to Crist has to do with a number of issues — among them his support for President bama’s economic stimulus package and a number of state appointments that have angered conservatives. But Rubio and others on the right have also gone after Crist for his support of cap-and-trade legislation a position that has drawn vehement opposition from conservatives across the country. “The political circumstances have changed” Rubio told the Palm Beach Post last week.

But Sansom – who has since been indicted by a Leon County grand jury on charges that he steered taxpayer money to a college project to benefit a developer – did not use his own money for the nearly $600 meal. Instead records show that the Destin Republican used a credit card given to him by the Republican Party of Florida. The March 2008 dinner receipt was included in records released by State Attorney Willie Meggs as part of his investigation. Republican officials have refused to say which elected officials have party credit cards or what expenses those officials charged on their cards. The use of the credit cards raises questions about whether politicians are using money from lobbyists and other donors for personal expenses without public accountability. Florida has strict laws that ban lobbyists or their clients from buying meals or showering gifts on lawmakers the governor and other statewide elected officials.
