President bama’s formidable political movementfailed to mobilize until the threat was in their face. SomeRepublicans seemed ready to work with the Administration until theysaw the ferocity of the protesters. Those who believe the protestswere staged by the GP are giving the Republican Party too muchcredit. They’re not that well organized. It’s not that the public rejects health care reform. It’s stilla popular idea. The Kaiser Health Care poll continues to show solidsupport for requiring all Americans to have health insurance withsubsidies for those who can’t afford it (68 percent).

Lawmakers are expected to hold a hearing next month on the proposal moving up the consideration date from ctober and allowing legislation to be passed and signed into law before the deadline for a special election. Patrick told a local radio station Wednesday that he believes the proposal was “entirely reasonable” and said he would sign the bill if it reached his desk. Despite expressed admiration for Kennedy’s legacy the state’s Republican Party leader said Wednesday that the GP opposes any change to the current law. “We must honor Senator Kennedy’s service by allowing those who sent him to the Senate to decide the next generation of leaders for Massachusetts” said Jennifer Nassour chairwoman of the Massachusetts Republican Party.

Keep in mind that Stavisky is a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat who makes his living largely by working against Republican candidates so he has a vested interest in trying to paint the New York GP as aligned with the so-called “far right” that even moderate Republicans claim dominates the party at the national level.
