The bill’s proponents myself among them also strove to enforce a no-amendment strategy on the Senate floor. With Republicans and most Democrats on the Finance Committee adhering to the strategy countless amendments were fended off and the compromise was protected from unraveling. None of this would have happened had the Reagan administration not taken on some of the Republican Party’s sacred cows — the oil and gas industry real-estate interests and large industrial enterprises all of which benefited disproportionately from loopholes. Similarly the bill would never have passed had some Democrats not taken on an ingrained party orthodoxy — the belief that equity demanded higher tax rates. In addition there was the human factor. I remember a meeting in the White House with President Reagan and the supporters of tax reform from both parties. Each member of Congress had a few minutes to say something to the president.
Colo. Republican Party creates backlash for GP
Denver Post
Senate candidate Jane Norton. Dick Wadhams pointed to a rash of e-mails during the weekend among Colorado Republicans who are upset with the National Republican Senatorial Committee which they believe is playing favorites in the crowded 2010 primary field. The backlash is so strong Republican sources say that Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck might stay in the Senate race after all.

So the White House has decided to be charitable probably a good strategy since Jenkins’ comment is exactly the kind of repulsive race-baiting expression many voters will find radioactive. That could redound in bama’s favor. Still it’s astonishing that a U. congresswoman in a public meeting in Topeka in the YouTube age would say the Republican Party needed a “great white hope” to defeat bama.
Kay Bailey Hutchison calls for more ‘enlightened’ leadership in Texas
Dallas Morning News
“While I do think I can do more in Texas to govern better I also want to build a Republican majority” she told a group of civic and business leaders in Dallas called the Friday Group. “It is in all of our best interest that we have a Republican Party that’s worthy of governing in Texas and also having the message go out to Americans that the biggest state that is still reliably Republican is a state that has enlightened Republicans in leadership. “Hutchison said she wanted to focus on issues such as education transportation property rights and health care. And though she didn’t mention his name she bashed Perry for his comments this year expressing sympathy for those who think Texas should consider leaving the union. “Silly rhetoric about secession from the union being an option is not a good image for Texas in America or in Texas” she said. Perry spokesman Mark Miner called Hutchison’s remarks insulting to Republicans and conservatives.
