Some in the GP though had a different message: Good riddance. They thought he had been selfish that he had furthered his own political career at the expense of the Republican Party in his home state. They felt that Romney’s growing focus on social issues – namely his outspoken opposition to gay marriage abortion rights and stem cell research – damaged the GP brand in the Bay State which had historically emphasized fiscal conservatism and moderate social positions. “ne thing that hasn’t worked well for Republicans all across New England is the tilt toward social issues that the national party has taken’’ state Senator Richard Tisei then the incoming Senate minority leader said as Romney was preparing to leave the State House in 2006. “I think the governor in his attempts to position himself in the Republican primary has highlighted a lot of social issues and I think quite frankly that hurt [Lieutenant Governor] Kerry Healey and it also.

Larry King specifically asked General Colin Powell if he believed that the Republican Party would pay for the way they treated the Latina nominee referring to the way she was lambasted for being a reverse racist and using her ethnic heritage to show ‘favoritism’ a charge Sonia Sotomayor and her supporters adamantly denied. Senator Lindsey Graham agreeing with Sotomayor’s judicial record and not hyped-up speculation was the only Republican Senator on the Senate Judiciary Committee to vote in favor of Sotomayor. Here is the conversation as it transpired between Larry King and General Colin Powell. Larry King: Do you think your party is going to pay for some of the way they treated Judge Sotomayor in the — in the confirmation hearings?Colin Powell: I — I think it will — it will pass quickly frankly. resigning after being arrested in a federal corruption sweep. Stanley is identified as a “conservative Republican” but Elwell’s party and ideology aren’t noted. This kind of thing is extremely meaningful to readers and looks absolutely intentional regardless of whether anyone meant to highlight the misdeed by the Republican or not. And yes for the record Elwell is a Democrat. There are those who will argue that it’s more relevant when a politician who professes conservative values is caught doing something obviously contrary to those positions and I do think that’s a valid criticism — as long as we’re talking apples to apples. I think it’s patently unfair to criticize people specifically for something they’ve never taken a public position on.
