The 2006 documentary Emancipation Revelation Revolution a Renaissance Women production discusses the history of the civil rights struggle of African Americans. The film which won the “Best Cutting Edge Film” award at the 2006 NIR Film Festival points out the role of the Republican and Democratic parties in the enactment of civil rights legislation in the aftermath of the War Between the States. After the War the Republican Party controlled both houses of Congress. In 1865 the 13th Amendment to the Constitution which abolished slavery was enacted. Every Republican member of Congress voted in favor of it while only 23% of Democrats did. Similarly the 14th Amendment which guaranteed equal protection under the law was passed in 1868 with unanimous Republican support and unanimous Democrat opposition. The same thing happened in 1870 when the 15th Amendment which guaranteed the right to vote to all Americans was enacted: total Republican support but not one Democrat in favor.

Impeach Ensign Now!Eric Salinas CA (Sent Monday June 22 2009 9:19 AM)If the GP wants to be an inclusive party it must stop using miniorities as verbal whipping posts for their base. Look at the attacks on Judge Sotomayor recently and the anti-immigration rhetoric when McCain proposed dealing with the illegal immigrants. Hard to grow the republican party when you consistently throw negative comments at the very groups needed for that to happen. Americans want both parties to D SMETHING and STP playing politics. It is probable that the GP will pick up some seats in the House in 2010 but to take back the majority would be a difficult task. Everything would have to go their way and I’m not sure the people are ready to give power back to the party that created the mess we face today.
