But it could be the start of a trend. Pennsylvania Democrats embraced a “moderate” when they invited Sen. Arlen Specter into their party — Specter left the Republican Party out of concern that the more conservative Republican challenging him in the Senate primary would win. And President bama tapped another moderate Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand to fill Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s seat in New York. n the other side of the aisle the Republican Party has struggled over the idea of moving to the center. While some Republicans in Congress and figures like Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele and former Secretary of State Colin Powell have called on the GP to look beyond the traditional conservative base others flat-out reject that strategy. Talk show host Rush Limbaugh and former Vice President Dick Cheney two of the most prominent voices in the party following John McCain’s presidential loss last year have ridiculed suggestions that the party is not moderate enough.
bama on healthcare bill: Flexibility on details not results

The opening date for the Judiciary Committee hearings will be 48 days after bama named Sotomayor. ASSCIATED PRESSRepublican Party vacant at the top poll indicates New poll results out yesterday give credence to the argument that the GP – battered in the 2006 and 2008 national elections trying to find its way in opposing President bama’s agenda – really is without a leader. When the Gallup survey asked respondents to name the “main person who speaks for the Republican Party today” 52 percent could not name anyone. Even among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents 47 percent could not pick a single person. And among those party leaders who were named only one of the top six – Senator John McCain the GP presidential nominee last year – is now in elected office. Leading the pack among Republican respondents were talk show host Rush Limbaugh and former House speaker Newt Gingrich at 10 percent each former vice president Dick Cheney at 9 percent and McCain at 6 percent. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney each drew 2 percent.
Analysis: Centrism wins in Virginia New Jersey
The Associated Press
In the nation’s two marquee primary elections this year Democrats in Virginia and Republicans in New Jersey selected moderate candidates for governor rejecting people whose views were further left or right. Certainly it’s hard to draw conclusions about the country’s political mindset from just two races in just two states. But the results of Virginia’s Democratic primary on Tuesday and New Jersey’s GP primary last week provide a window into where voters in both parties may stand in Democrat Barack bama’s first year as president and as the out-of-power Republican Party seeks to rebound. The results are all the more noteworthy because primaries usually attract only the most motivated voters typically people at the extreme ends of the political spectrum. But in these cases voters seemed to chose nominees who may give their parties the best chance of winning in November given each state’s political traditions. Moderate Creigh Deeds won the Democratic nomination in Virginia which until recently has tilted to the right nationally and moderate Republican Christopher Christie won the GP nod in New Jersey historically a left-leaning state. Ideologically each appears positioned to attract independents and moderates from the opposite party in the fall.
Green Party Decries Senate Coup and Calls for Grassroots Resistance
Green Party US (press release)
org 716-908-5226Albany NY — The New York State Green Party decries the latest power play in the NY State Senate. The leadership coup on Monday night by the Republican Party and at least two Democrats one under investigation for fraud and the other for physical assault is the newest in a serious of undemocratic and disgraceful acts that have earned the State Legislature the title of most undemocratic and “Stalinist” from the Brennan Center for Law and Justice. The Green Party calls for immediate overhaul of Legislative procedures and electoral reform including full public financing of campaigns proportional representation and allowing bills to come to a floor vote without leadership approval. The Green Party also calls for the NY State Attorney General and the Albany District Attorney to protect taxpayers by taking action against Floridian Thomas Golisano for potential bribery of two of the coup members and all of the legislators who have been suspected or convicted of criminal activity. “The coup leaders: Golisano Skelos Espada and Monserrate claim that this is a step towards democratic reform – which is always the refrain of autocratic coup leaders worldwide. Yet this is clearly a power play by a few disgruntled Democrats who are under investigation for fraud and physical assault Republicans angry about their allotted share of pork and a billionaire who believes he has a right to manipulate state government because of his wealth.

Republican Arizona Governor’s Tax Feud Continues to Split Her Party
U.S. News & World Report
"Well there is no media campaign" Pullen wrote "and as I have stated numerous times over the past ten days to numerous reporters and legislators I would not support such a campaign if it existed. " Pullen goes on to dismiss the "draft plan" the antitax group had obtained as being "a general approach on how to support the Governor’s proposed budget assuming that the legislature did not pass out a budget all very speculative. ""Asking me as chairman of the Arizona Republican Party to unequivocally and publicly announce my opposition to and repudiation of this campaign to be waged by Gov. Brewer is like knocking the stuffing out of your straw man" Pullen continued. "Therefore I will respond hypothetically as follows: If there were a media campaign (which there isn’t) targeting (unnamed) legislators who (may or may not) oppose Governor Brewer’s proposed budget then I would be unequivocally opposed to such a plan (if it existed which it doesn’t). "Which settles the issues of the media campaign Norquist says but not the larger issue of state GP support for Brewer’s $1 billion tax increase. "Randy Pullen stood next to the governor when she announced her tax hike.
