MATTHEWS – “We are in a battle for the soul of America” the Rev. Charles Butler of rangeburg told Calhoun County Republicans Thursday night during their convention to select officers and committeemen. Butler who is running for state Republican Party second vice chairman went on to say “It’s tough being black and a Republican. ”He said he wants “to expand minority outreach” and speak for minority participants in the party. The Republican Party needs to be able to speak to issues facing African-Americans and equip minority speakers to take a message to their communities Butler said. “If things continue as they are there will be no America” he said. Calhoun County Republican Party Chairman John Nelson opened the convention at the Calhoun County Courthouse with the first order of business to select the Rev.
