In about 15 instances Williams said the number of names on petitions was changed — with names added in some instances and with names crossed off in others. Coughlin said he was only aware of names of ineligible signers — such as those of unregistered voters or Democrats — having been crossed off the petition. Coughlin also noted the petitions were not for “political candidates” as classified under state law but for members of the Summit County Republican Party’s 475-member Central Committee. “The result of the (Jan. 13) hearing was that there was no violation of the law no election falsification” Coughlin said. Last year Coughlin and a group calling itself the New Summit County Republicans attempted to elect a majority of supporters to the Central Committee in a bid to unseat Arshinkoff whom the group alleged has been mismanaging the party. The bid failed as a majority of committee members voted to retain Arshinkoff at the committee’s organizational meeting in April 2008.
