The state’s new top-two primary allows candidates to state their party preference. And they could say anything they wanted as long as it wasn’t profane though they were urged by Secretary of State Sam Reed not to engage in any “funny business. Most Republican candidates chose to list their party preference as “Republican” or “Republican Party. ” The state’s three incumbent statewide officials all will appear as “Republican” candidates. But Rossi is carrying forward with a re-branding effort that started four years ago during his first run against Democrat Christine Gregoire. The tag lines on his TV commercials said “Rossi for governor GP” as do his yard signs. “We have found that voters know what GP means and we spent millions of dollars saying GP on the last campaign so we decided to stick with it” campaign spokeswoman Jill Strait said… There likely will be a few “Democrat” candidates changing their party preference to “Democratic. ” Some candidates filled in “Democrat” thinking that word alone would follow their name as it has on ballots in past years. But some Democrats say “Democrat Party” is a Republican construct meant to deny the party’s claim to being democratic. Jim McIntire D-Seattle who is leaving the Legislature for a run for state treasurer said he has asked to make the change though he doesn’t understand why anyone cares. “I’ve been a Democrat all my life so I don’t consider that an insult” he said. “People are worked up about semantics.

That’s the roots of the Republican Party and I still think there are still a lot of Republicans that believe that government ought to be small and balanced budgets and free markets and all these principles that for so long now we have been neglecting. CAVUT: Now how much of this is your anger at the way you were treated? PAUL: h I don’t think — I don’t look like an angry person. I’m not an angry person because I deal in philosophy. It’s a challenge in philosophy. I am determined but it’s all philosophic… But if our movement is for real which I believe it is this is going to continue. And the precinct organizations will continue. And as time goes on we will have an influence on the Republican Party. (CRSSTALK) CAVUT: Would you run — would you run Congressman as a third- party candidate — I guess now with Barr in the race a fourth-party candidate? PAUL: No I have never planned to do that never intended to do that.
Paul’s crusade resonates in this libertarian stronghold
Seattle Times – Jun 11, 2008
It is not only implicitly anti-foreign-war but pro-Constitution — the old-time Constitution that meant what it said. Paul is a political fundamentalist a libertarian who embraces such history-book ideas as gold-backed money and a mind-our-own-business foreign policy. It has been more than half a century since these were majority ideas within the Republican Party. But in the past year they have fueled a “Ron Paul revolution” on the Right especially in what The New York Times calls “the libertarian strongholds of Idaho Washington state Montana and North Dakota. Though Paul won only 14 percent of the Nevada caucuses in January his forces gained a working majority at the state convention April 26. Party officials shut down the convention before it could formally elect national delegates and told everyone to go home.
