Independents who now constitute 19. 37% of voters were barred from voting in February’s Republican presidential primary but were welcomed in the Democratic contest. James Hartman the former chairman of the Alameda County Republican Party said those handicaps are the byproduct of an inflexible party leadership and he doubts the GP will reverse its fortunes unless that changes. “It’s being dominated and controlled by a very conservative faction” said Hartman a Walnut Creek attorney who joined about a thousand other Republicans attending the convention. “How can you win an election without appealing to the ‘decline-to-state voters’ and when you have only a third of the electorate? Just look at the math. McCain’s California campaign chairman former California Secretary of State Bill Jones on Saturday dropped by to rally support for the presumptive Republican nominee and emphasized that McCain had traditionally done well with both independent and Latino voters. That he said gives him a legitimate shot to win California in November which would help the state party in the years ahead.

Why would a legislator who has a 4-year-old or a 7-year-old want to go to the Loew’s in South Beach?” said one former Republican Party official who spoke on condition of anonymity. “If you have it at a nice place like Disney or Universal it’s more creative and low stress on the members. Although Disney’s $125000 gift to the Democratic Party last ctober was the largest individual in-kind donation it or Universal has made to either party based on state records going back to the 2001-02 election cycle the two companies have been more generous overall to the Republican Party. Republicans have throughout the decade controlled the Governor’s Mansion and commanded strong majorities in both chambers of the Legislature. Records show that Disney has made about $342000 worth of in-kind donations to the parties since 2001 and just under $200000 of that was steered to the GP.
