But immigration is also a key to success for Republicans Norquist says. “To go from ’secure the border’ which is a rational position to ‘deport people’ is to lose the next generation [of Hispanics] and to lose power in America” Norquist says. “The Republican Party needs to focus on dealing with the immigration issue in a way that does not antagonize Hispanic voters or damage the economy” he adds. “And they need to focus on American domestic politics while maintaining a strong position in terms of national defense. They need to focus on the tax-and-spending issues.

"There are a lot of members of my caucus who don’t have confidence in following someone who wasn’t willing to follow me on the floor. It doesn’t mean that I’m taking an ax to them or anything of that sort" Seifert said. Minnesota Republican Party Chairman Ron Carey said that the party will support the endorsed party candidates but that he expects contentious conventions in the House districts whose members strayed. "These are people who are good Republicans who left the reservation on this issue" he said. "This was a critical watershed issue this is the largest tax increase in the history of the state of Minnesota. To have Republicans not stand against the largest tax increase that’s really baffling. Party mirrorIn some ways said Brian Vargus a political scientist at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Elrod seems to epitomize the struggle gripping the Republican Party the same struggle evident in the Republican presidential nominating process. John McCain is capturing votes but has yet to be embraced by Christian conservatives. “The Republican Party is undergoing significant tensions within itself” Vargus said. “It is kind of hard to characterize them one way or another. “The irony with Elrod’s opposition to the marriage amendment is that Elrod said his position is rooted in a basic Christian principle. “I think marriage is a sacrament. That means it is something ordained by God.
