Shut out by GP independents may tilt Democratic
Los Angeles Times – Jan 21, 2008
“It’s pretty hard to build a big tent if you don’t let anybody else in” said Dan Schnur a veteran Republican political consultant. “It doesn’t make sense for a party that wants to and needs to broaden its base to throw this kind of obstacle in the path of an independent voter who wants to hang out with us. What really counted was his strong message on national security and the fact he has been the most consistent candidate on the war in Iraq championing unpopular measures like the troop surge that are now paying off.

He also told local reporters in a hurricane strike zone that he did not support national catastrophe insurance _ a position certain to rankle some Floridians and perhaps draw fire from his opponents. “I believe that this nation and federal government has an obligation to help out in any tragedy or natural disaster” McCain said during a round-table. “Very badly we need to fix our ability to bring relief help and assistance both short term and long term to the victims of disaster.
