I’m Mitt Romney and I not only approve this message I’m asking for your vote. KEY IMAGES: Romney jacketless in shirt and tie speaks directly to the camera as it pans a backdrop that displays an American flag. ANAYLISIS: Coming after a series of ads criticizing Republican rivals John McCAin and Mike Huckabee this new ad attempts to portray Romney as a sunny Reaganesque optimist one week before the New Hampshire primaries. The ad is a call for change a final appeal for votes without specifics… Don’t vote your anger toward President Bush or the policies of his administration it seems to say. Undeclared voters in New Hampshire tend to lean Democrat or Republican but they can choose in which party’s primary they want to vote. Polls show those voters are leaning Democratic this year in part over dissatisfaction with the war in Iraq. Romney has supported Bush’s policies in the conflict. The “no one votes for yesterday” message could just as well be beseeching New Hampshire voters not to vote on the basis on the Jan.

He let his wife Cindy do some of the arguing too. “Many of these people are good people” Cindy McCain said about her husband’s rivals at the beginning of a house party. “They have been managers in their lives. They have not been leaders. They have not been men that understand what it means to send young men and women into combat. And more importantly how to bring them home with honor with dignity and in victory.

A Tale of Political Dirty Tricks Makes the Case for Election Reform
New York Times – Jan 1, 2008
Raymond says his instructions came from James Tobin the northeast regional director of the Republican National Committee. And he says a top official of the New Hampshire Republican Party provided the phone numbers of the Democratic get-out-the-vote banks. Raymond jammed the lines — placing hundreds of hang-up calls an hour — to five Democratic offices across the state and a phone bank run by volunteer firefighters. Raymond pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit phone harassment and was sentenced to five months in prison… Tobin argued in court that the idea to jam the phones was not his and that he committed no crime. A federal appeals court in Boston reversed his conviction saying that the law he was found guilty under was not “a close fit for what he did. ” The Republican Party has paid a high-priced law firm in Washington to defend Mr. Tobin according to The Associated Press and Mr. Raymond suspects it is because Republican bigwigs “wanted him to keep his yap shut” about the origins of the scheme. Raymond doesn’t offer proof in the book and is clearly bitter about his former employers not coming to his defense.

Rudolph Giuliani
guardian.co.uk – Jan 1, 2008
Then there is Rudy the social liberal and figure of fun who believes in gun control and a woman’s right to choose has been married three times and lived with a gay couple after his most recent break up one of whom he affectionately called “mother”. Which of these two Rudy Giulianis sticks in the minds of Republican voters when they are weighing up who to choose to be their candidate for president in 2008 could be a decisive factor in the primaries. It could determine whether he wins their nomination and if he does whether the wider electorate then goes on to hand him the keys to the White House.

Krugman: The great divide
International Herald Tribune – Jan 1, 2008
In fact however except for Mike Huckabee – a peculiar case who'll deserve more discussion if he stays in contention – the leading Republican contenders have gone out of their way to assure voters that they will not deviate an inch from the Bush path. Why? Because the Republican Party is still controlled by a conservative movement that does not tolerate deviations from tax-cutting free-market greed-is-good orthodoxy. To see the extent to which Republican politicians still cower before the power of movement conservatism consider the sad case of John McCain. McCain's lingering reputation as a maverick straight talker comes largely from his opposition to the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 which he said at the time were too big and too skewed to the rich. Those objections would seem to have even more force now with America facing the costs of an expensive war – which McCain fervently supports – and with income inequality reaching new heights. But McCain now says that he supports making the Bush tax cuts permanent.

Challenge for conservatives
Washington Times – Jan 1, 2008
Reagan did not simply seek short-term votes but was patient and let the people find him and in doing so find themselves and vindicate his vision. Today’s conservatives must do likewise and not be defined by transient problems but instead by their core beliefs. Neither the 2008 election nor the Republican Party are beyond conservatives’ grasp but more important than either is that they retain their identity. Young served in the Treasury Department and the ffice of Management and Budget from 2001 until 2004 and as a congressional staff member in 1987-2000. Add as FavoriteTIMES NETWRK.
