Party officials said they don’t believe one candidate has been able to gain an unfair advantage. “You don’t want one campaign who just happens to be the first in the state to stack the deck” said Chris Wilcox GP executive director. “And in terms of building a Republican Party we don’t want people who are just going to come in and cast a vote and take off. Technically precinct captains are supposed to discern the preferred candidate of people living in the precinct and vote for that candidate then stick around to help with party organization. A Candidate-In-Theory-nly: For the first nine months of 2007 uncertainty and dissatisfaction hung over the Republican party. The GP entered the year having lost its majority control in Congress and saddled with an unpopular war and president. Perhaps more unnerving for party stalwarts early on was the lack of a single presidential contender who satisfied the party’s different wings.

The white knight hadn't yet ridden into the Republican contest… And it was downhill from there. It was a sign of things to come when influential evangelical Christian leader James Dobson of Colorado-based Focus on the Family sent a private e-mail (which was leaked to The Associated Press) saying Thompson had "no passion no zeal" and "can't speak his way out of a paper bag on the campaign trail. "Now that the more socially conservative wing of the party had gotten a glance at the man who was supposed to save them they looked back to rest of the field. The stage was set for a surge.
