Giuliani supports abortion rights and gay rights and during his eight years as New York mayor strongly favored gun control. Romney who was head of the 2002 Winter lympics said the Republican Party needs a candidate with business experience. “I didn't spend my life in politics” he said. “It's high time to have someone with experience in the private sector because the president is not an internship. ” Romney said the broad name recognition enjoyed by Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton may ultimately prove to be her demise.

There is a strong sense out there that American conservatism and theRepublican Party that houses it is in a rare state of dysfunction. Thedominion it has exercised over American politics for 30 years may be at anend. ut there on the oped pages and the blogs and even in some statecapitals there is a genuine debate about what has gone wrong and what canbe done to put it right. What should a conservative foreign policy look like? What about the role andsize of government? How much of a part should religious certainties play inthe formulation of a secular social policy? But this lively discussion hasnot really reached the presidential debates. The main candidates seem eagerto avoid challenging the prevailing conservative orthodoxies.

Debbie Stafford 55 who also is a minister said the Republican Party no longer represents her values. “Ideally I find myself a moderate and I think I would be best suited for a third party. However the reality is that our political system is not designed for a third party voice to be strong” Stafford said Thursday. She added: “I am not leaving the Republican Party as much as I believe the Republican Party left me” she said. Democrats had a 39-26 majority in the state House before the switch.

In this way the Republican Party has abandoned the Hamiltonian ground. It has lost intimate contact with the working-class dreamer who longs to make good. Instead this ground is being seized by a Democrat. ver the past few months Hillary Clinton has issued a string of specific policy programs aimed directly at members of the aspiring middle class. Yesterday it was a tax credit for college.
